Working for a Small Business or Coporation

When you graduate from college there are several decisions that you have to make that will effect the rest of your life. The first and perhaps most major one is whether or not you want to work for a small business or large corporation. There are advantages and disadvantages to working for both.

In a small business you will likely be able to have your hands in many different projects. You will most likely be asked to do a variety of things that will contribute to the everyday running of the company. Most likely, the people that you work for you will depend on you to get a large amount of work done. With this you need to understand that you will often be doing work that may not be in your field of expertise. This is understandable because small businesses do not have the resources to hire a large staff of people for various jobs. If you think that you are team player who would enjoy a job where you will be doing a variety of things, then working in a small business is a good idea. However, if you think that you would be annoyed at having to do a variety of work that you may not be excited about, then you should consider working for a corporation.

In a large coporation you are hired for a specific job and that job alone. Noone will come into your office and ask you to do something that you are either not familiar with or do not want to do. The running of the company depends on everyone completeling their work to the best of their ability and while you are contributing to the running of the company, you may not see your involvement as directly. Working in this environment is usually more organized and more professional.
